Art as an Impetus for Successful Redevelopment:
A Panel Discussion and Public Dialogue, Part II

Sunday, March 30th, 2008
4:00-6:00pm
With reception to follow

Featured Speakers:

Richard Sennett, Author of The Conscience of the Eye: The Design and Social Life of Cities and Classic Essays in the Culture of Cities, as well as many others. He is Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics, and at New York University.

Ralph DiBart, City re-development consultant and currently Executive Director of the New Rochelle BID. Mr. DiBart was consultant for the city of Peekskill during its envisioning of the Downtown Artist District and the hopes for a ‘Soho of the North’.

Moderated by:

Janet Langsam, Executive Director of the Westchester Arts Council and former Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New York. Ms. Langsam is a tour-de-force for promoting the arts and effectively demonstrating how the arts can empower communal revitalization and renewal.

Urban centers across the globe, from Bilbao, Munster and Istanbul, the East End of London, Chelsea and now the Bowery in New York, to name just a few, have experienced a revival through envisioning their communities as artists’ havens and locations for museums and arts organizations. On October 5th, 2007 HVCCA offered a public forum featuring city planners focused on the arts and commerce, Linda Lees and Joyce Pomeroy Schwartz, as well as Bilbao born and bred, HVCCA artist-in-residence, Maider Bilbao. The palpable interest in that event and the lively and heated discussions confirmed the need for further dialogue on the development of Peekskill and its neighbor communities so that the hopes and visions raised by the development of the Hudson River as an ‘Artist Region’ are met.
