“A World View in a Paper Cut”
Presentation by Dylan Graham
Sunday, October 11, 2009, 4:00-6:00 PM

Dylan Graham, Dissent In the Colonial Pacific, Thermidor II, A Geocentric Model (2009)

Join us for a special presentation by "Double Dutch" artist Dylan Graham!

Dylan Graham's paper cutouts are monochromatic two-dimensional works made by delicately cutting paper down to minute details. The depictions are generally of dramatic global events seen from both a personal perspective as well as from within a historic-cultural context. The artist concentrates on the social aspects and repercussions of colonialism. Growing up he saw the effects of colonialism on the Maori people of New Zealand. In moving 'back' to Europe and settling in Amsterdam, he returned to his family roots. He looks closely at his presence in this new/old land and notices how he and other new immigrants are in effect historically playing out a 'reverse migration'.

In relation to the exhibition 'Double Dutch' where Dylan's installation is displayed, the artist focus' on the history of the Netherlands as being one of the major colonialist nations, accustomed to occupying other lands, but not at all accustomed to being inundated from others within their borders.

Dylan Graham, 1972, Otautahi, New Zealand, lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
